DOWNLOADING MOVIES (MP4 FILES)

It happens to all of us: we spot a video which seems interesting, and would want to download it into our iPhone or iPad's Photos app - Either to have a copy of it, or to easily share it with others as a video, or sometimes to edit it with the iMovie app. Unfortunately, even when we get the full URL of a video, putting it in Safari only results in the video being played in it (see on the left), with no option to save it in Photos nor "misuse" any app to actually save a copy of the video on your iPhone or iPad.

The solution to that annoying problem is the VLC Player for iOS: this player, in addition to being of playing "almost any" audio or video format, can download network streams into your iPhone or iPad. Once you installed the app on your iOS device, simply tap the Downloads item under the Network section; where you'll then see an input box in which you should paste the video URL from Safari and tap Return to start the download.

Once the download of the video file is complete, you can play it in VLC (without having to re-download, and even when your device has no Internet access) and also by tapping the Edit button on the top right of VLC you can save it into your local Photos app; which then allows easy sharing and of course editing in iMovie.
